The expedition

Remote. Tropical. Uncrowded perfection. This isn’t just a surf trip, it’s an escape to one of Indonesia’s most untouched islands.

Warm water. Consistent Indian Ocean swell. Empty lineups. Long reef passes wrapping around a raw, sun-drenched island coastline.

This expedition is designed for surfers who want a tropical surf experience, off the beaten path. Whether you’re looking to level up or just escape the noise, this is your environment.

It’s for those wanting

  • A less travelled tropical destination
  • Less crowded lineups
  • Warm water
  • Unique non-surf activities
  • The slow pace of island life

No crowds. No chaos. Just clean waves, island life, and time to reset.

FAQ
Is this trip right for my surf level?

Rote and West Timor offer a range of waves, but this trip is best suited to surfers with at least some ocean experience who can comfortably paddle out, catch unbroken waves, and handle themselves in varying conditions. Our guides match you with suitable breaks based on ability and the day's conditions, though some of the region's most renowned waves are powerful and reef-based, so complete beginners may find it challenging. If you're unsure, get in touch and we'll help you find the right fit.

What are the waves like?

Rote and West Timor are home to some of Indonesia's most consistent, uncrowded waves, a mix of reef breaks, points, and playful setups ranging from user-friendly to powerful depending on swell. With access to multiple surf zones, we chase the best conditions available for the group. Expect long rides, warm water, and a side of Indonesia many travelling surfers overlook.

What boards should I bring?

We recommend bringing two boards: a reliable everyday board and a second suited to either smaller or more powerful surf, with a versatile shortboard, step-up, fish, or mid-length combination covering most conditions for intermediate and advanced surfers. Hire equipment can be arranged, though availability is more limited than in major surf destinations, so advance notice is essential. We'll send destination-specific recommendations once you've booked. Not sure what to bring? Just ask. We'll help you dial in the right equipment before the trip so you can focus on the adventure, not the logistics.

What's included in the price?

We believe great adventures should be straightforward. That's why we include as much as possible in the trip cost, typically accommodation, local transport, surf guiding, selected activities, and on-the-ground support, along with pre-trip planning assistance. Flights, travel insurance, personal expenses, optional activities, and equipment hire may not be included unless stated on the trip page, and every expedition comes with a clear list of inclusions and exclusions.

What's not included in the price?

Unless stated otherwise: international/domestic flights, travel insurance (required for all participants), visa and entry costs, meals/drinks not listed in the itinerary, personal spending money, surfboard hire, optional activities outside the itinerary, and airport transfers outside the designated windows. We can help arrange flights through our ATOL-protected flight partners.

Do I need a visa?

Visa requirements depend on your nationality, and it's your responsibility to have the correct documentation. We'll point you to the relevant government resources and can help clarify what's needed, but check entry requirements as early as possible since rules can change.

Are flights included?

No, flights aren't included, giving you flexibility over departure airport, airline, and schedule. We can help source flights through our ATOL-protected partners, and we'll provide recommended arrival/departure times once you've booked.

What airport should I fly to?

El Tari Airport in Kupang, West Timor. Most international travellers connect through Bali. From Kupang, the ferry to Rote, your night in Kupang and transfers on both islands are included. We'll send detailed travel guidance before departure and can quote flights through our ATOL-protected partners.

What accommodation is provided?

You'll spend the week at a beachfront resort overlooking the legendary T-Land point break, with local boat operators just a two-minute walk away for quick access to the lineup and surrounding reefs. Staying in one location gives you the freedom to settle into island life and spend more time in the water, with tropical surroundings, ocean views, and the slower pace that makes Rote unlike anywhere else.

What makes this destination special?

Perched on the southern edge of Indonesia, Rote feels like a world apart: days begin with views of the legendary T-Land point break, followed by boat rides to crystal-clear lineups and some of the longest waves in Indonesia. Unlike many of the country's better-known surf destinations, Rote has retained a genuine sense of remoteness and authenticity, the kind of place that feels like you've found it before the rest of the world catches on.

Can I travel solo?

Yes, many guests join solo. Trips are designed to bring like-minded travellers together through shared surf sessions, meals, and downtime, so you'll quickly become part of the group regardless of how you arrive. Travelling solo, you can share a twin room for A$3,390 or have one to yourself for A$3,790.

What you’ll surf

Rote is home to some of Indonesia’s longest, most consistent left-handers, plus a handful of hidden options depending on conditions.

T-Land (Besialu Reef)

World class left · long, fast & mechanical

T-Land (Besialu Reef)

A world-renowned left-hand reef break known for its long, perfectly peeling walls and warm tropical waters. T-Land delivers a raw yet refined surf experience that has made it one of Indonesia’s most iconic destination waves.

The Bommie

Heavy & hollow · advanced

The Bommie

The powerful outside section of the T-Land reef system, known for producing faster, heavier waves with long open faces and occasional barrel sections. Breaking further out to sea over shallow coral reef, the Bommie comes alive on larger southwest swells, delivering high-speed walls suited to experienced surfers looking for longer, more critical rides.

Sucky Mamas

Short, shallow & punchy

Sucky Mamas

A fast, shallow reef break near the T-Land coastline, known for its punchy take-offs, hollow sections, and crystal-clear turquoise water. More technical and wave-sensitive than T-Land, Sucky Mamas offers short but intense rides over live coral reef, rewarding experienced surfers with steep drops, tubing sections, and high-performance walls when the swell and tides align.

T-Land Inside

Forgiving · great for progression

T-Land Inside

The more approachable inside section of the T-Land reef system, offering playful walls and softer take-offs. While capable of producing fast sections on larger swells, the inside is known for its forgiving shape and consistent open-face waves, ideal for intermediate to advanced surfers looking to enjoy the speed and beauty of T-Land in a less demanding setting.

Boa

Fun, rippable right hand reef break

Boa

Famous for its perfectly shaped turquoise barrels and shallow coral reef setup, Boa breaks close to shore beneath dramatic limestone cliffs. It offers fast, hollow waves that attract experienced surfers chasing clean tubes and high-performance reef surfing. While smaller in scale than T-Land, the wave is highly photogenic and delivers intense, mechanical rides when the swell and tides align.

    My favourite trip yet!

Honestly the best trip I have been on!! Made so many new friends, had the best laughs and was hosted so well by the team!! This will be hard to beat!!

Surfing with Salt Atlas was so much fun!! We literally had dolphins swimming under us as we caught waves. Our instructors were so nice and really helpful and the entirety of the trip, we had incredible food and hospitality where ever we went!! The accomodation was so nice and right across from the incredible WA coast line/beaches. Our driver was such a legend, so was the chef and our incredible host Kieran!

Can't wait for the next trip with Salt Atlas!! Fully recommend!

I've had the most amazing time on my 10 day trip in WA with Salt Atlas. I had never surfed before, and from the first lesson I was made to feel comfortable and confident on the board. The groups are small, so I was able to get to know everyone, and left feeling that I had made great friends. The trip is also very customisable, with many options for add-on experiences - I did the Bush Tucker Tour of the Margaret River wineries and breweries, a dive around Busselton Jetty, and several trips to towns and local areas of natural beauty such as Boranup forest, Indijup Springs, Sugarloaf rock etc. there is plenty of opportunity to spot the local wildlife - we saw roos, dolphins, whales, seals, kookaburra and more! The food was also consistently excellent quality - my personal highlights were the beach barbecue and the chicken satay. We didn't surf every day, and you have to make allowances for weather conditions, but there was always something to do, and the changing itinerary added to the experience. Thanks so much to our wonderful host, driver, chef, instructors and everyone else involved with the trip who made it such a memorable experience!

An unforgettable experience — far more than just a surf trip!

Salt Atlas offers so much more than just a surf trip! Everything was thoughtfully curated by Kieran and his team, from the incredible food prepared by our private chef, Victor, to the amazing add-on experiences, which for me included scuba diving and sailing.

As a solo traveller, one of the things I’ve appreciated most is the incredible sense of community. It’s been such a welcoming environment to meet like-minded people, share adventures and feel part of something special!

The perfect blend of surfing, adventure, incredible food and genuine connection. I couldn’t recommend Salt Atlas more highly!

    What an epic trip!

Had a fantastic experience with Salt Atlas, the crew is very friendly and the food prepared by the chef was amazing. We were in southwest Aus, what an incredibly beautiful place!! Also, the accommodation is fantastic. Just a short walk to some great breweries and restaurants, and not far from some of the best waves in Aus. Got to go sailing, diving, explored the wineries, as well as plenty of surf. Shared the trip with a great group of people, good vibes all around.

Trip of a life time!!!! 🏄‍♀️👌🌎

The most amazing experience being introduced to the west coast of Australia! 🌊 This was my first time surfing, and it did not disappoint. Salt Atlas took care of everything, from surf lessons everyday and food to some amazing optional add-ons if wanted to explore even more of Western Australia like scuba diving, bush-tucker, sailing, wale/dolphin watching and so much more!

The accommodation was great too, with such a lovely atmosphere and the perfect balance of socializing, making new friends and having some downtime to relax. Such an incredible experience, and I couldn’t recommend it enough! An Aussie BBQ on the beach is a must too! I can’t wait to come back 🏄‍♀️🏄‍♀️🏄‍♀️🏄‍♀️

    Trip of a Lifetime

Where do I start! What an amazing trip!
The over all experience has been perfect, I feel like I’ve really experienced everything that the south west has to offer. In the 10 days we’ve managed to surf everyday and fit in so many other activities, my favourites being the sailing charter and the scuba diving! But we also walked a section of the cape to cape path, bathed in the Injidup spas, experienced the Bushtucker tour and have seen more beautiful beaches along the way! We were also bless to be visited by dolphins whilst sitting in the line up.

The trip wasn’t just about all the experiences, because what’s an experience if you can’t share it with people! Everyone I’ve met in the Salt Atlas trip has been so nice and I’ve surly made friends for life. Theirs is a real sense of community here with everyone getting stuck in with the activities, and then having lovely down time in the evenings, eating, drinking and laughing together!

This brings me to another highlight which definitely deserves its own section… The Food!!!! Having a privet chef catering to all our needs has been such a luxury! Victoria has gone above and beyond with every meal. I could name everything I’ve eaten it’s been so good, but I’ll name my three favourites: lasagna, the seafood paella, and the Aussie Bbq , which was cooked on the beach at sunset!

Overall this has been a trip of a lifetime and I would highly recommended to any and everyone!
